I was excited to see what new research they found in this article that I read on 2/3/2010, but was slightly disappointed when I read it. It is interesting to not that they are finding that serotonin were lower in babies who died of SIDS:
“Kinney’s team found that serotonin levels were 26 percent lower in tissue from babies who died of SIDS than those who died from other causes, and they also found low levels of the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase, which is needed to make serotonin.”
Now, correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t serotonin our “happy” hormone? Yet they are still pointing to sleeping on tummies as the main cause. I understand the concern and the recommendations concerning babies sleeping on their tummies, however, when I read that serotonin levels were low my instinct said that these babies were not happy. Could it be that their “happy” needs were not being met? Could it be that there are more issues involved other than just sleeping position?
Sometimes I don’t understand researchers and their findings at all. It’s like they want to prove that tummy sleeping is the problem, not that there may be other underlying issues. But hey, maybe it’s just me. What do you think?
